FoS Autumn 2016

Friends of Squirrels topped off a busy term with a very festive (but not frosty) Christmas Fair. Mr Appleby led a school sing-along with the Reception boys especially showing considerable lung-power in Orchard Hall.

The older boys were harder to pin down, caught we suspect between the depths of the Laser Tag tent and trying to ‘Beat the Goalie’. In his grotto, Santa took some interesting requests for presents including socks and small change (to zap green aliens in the outdoor games we wondered?).  The fair was a great success with an atmosphere much remarked upon, which is testament to the school spirit – thank you to all the parents (even ex-Squirrels parents), teachers, pupils, class reps, FoS committee and our invaluable caretaker Mr Wright, all of whom invested so much of their time and energies. The fair raised a wonderful £3,700.

Earlier in the term we invited parents to pit their wits at the Annual Quiz and FoS AGM, held for the first time at the King’s College School Dining Hall with our returning quizmaster Mr (not Mrs) Dodd, our collective enthusiasm for a cerebral challenge and Fish ‘n’ Chips supper having outgrown Orchard Hall.  As a committee we were also invited to join the assembly in November led by Paralympic gold-medallist Claire Cashmore (another member of the greater school family) who not only allowed us to inspect her medals, but gave us insight into her gruelling training schedule and incredibly inspiring attitude to achieving one’s very best. Claire’s enthusiasm also reminded us of the WCPS tenets: Excellence, Respect and Friendship.

Besides the fun, our fundraising this term was put to good use with forthcoming storyteller workshops for both Reception and Year One and a school-wide Mind Missions problem-solving day.  Towards the end of term the boys were very excited to receive their own logins for Spellodrome and Mathletics, two fantastic tablet-based educational resources that we are pleased to support as they are trialled within the school and at home.

Next term we invite you to celebrate the arrival of spring with our School Ball, ‘Hawaiian Nights’, on Saturday 18th March 2017. Expect a night of vintage glamour, dinner and dancing in the spirit of the balmy southern seas.  This event happens only once every three years, so don’t miss out!  And of course there is our end-of-term bonanza, the Summer Fair on Saturday 24th June.

The autumn term is always important for Friends of Squirrels as we welcome new committee members. With just three years at the school for each boy, Friends of Squirrels is an active and ever-changing committee. If you are interested in finding out more about what we do or how you can get involved please do get in touch via the school office and come along to our next meeting – we’d love to see you there!
