FoS Spring 2017

The highlight of the spring term is always Book Week and this year we were delighted to fund a visit from children’s author Adam Guillain. Inspired by the ‘Fearless Heroes and Amazing Adventures’ theme, we were also excited to host the inaugural Book Week Festival, including a good-as-new book sale, superhero mask-making and The Spectacular Squirrels’ Sweetie Stall.

Friends of Squirrels has been able to fund some fantastic activities this term including a French Day, Platform theatre workshop and Mind Mission Day (full of logical reasoning, puzzles and problem-solving).  We also contribute 10% of all our fundraising activity to our current chosen charity, First Touch, the neonatal charity based at St George’s. In February we hosted refreshments for the Getting to Know You days for prospective students and their parents and in March arranged, for current parents and carers, a Mother’s Day coffee morning and second-hand uniform sale.

The spring weather may not have kicked in, but our term finale had a decidedly tropical air as we invited 150 parents and teachers to dance the night away at our Hawaiian Nights Ball. Festooned in colourful blooms and starry lights, The Great Hall at King’s College School  - complete with The Flying Squirrel Tiki Bar -brought the balminess of a South Pacific to Wimbledon Common for one night only. The hard work of the Ball committee and the success of our auction, with tremendous support from parents, meant that we raised a staggering £31,000 – directly benefitting the school and the incredible work of local children’s hospice Shooting Star Chase. Thank you to everyone who came!

We’re looking forward now to the summer term and our fair on Saturday 24th June. Be sure to put the date in your diary – we’ll be bidding farewell to our year two boys with all sorts of fun and celebrating the long summer ahead.

If you have considered joining Friends of Squirrels, or would like to know more about what we do, please do make contact via the school office. A new term is a great reason to get involved and we’d love to hear from you.
