In Key stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) we build on the enthusiasm for learning and the confidence that has been established and nurtured in Reception. We place a strong emphasis on the boys becoming problem-solving, creative and independent thinkers as they develop and mature during this time.
At this point children begin to study the specific subject areas of Art, Design Technology, Science, Computing, Religious Education and Personal, Social and Health Education. History and Geography are taught through the creative curriculum and known as Topic work. We continue to maintain a strong focus on developing the childrens' understanding of English and Mathematics.
The learning experience is enhanced through ICT in the form of interactive whiteboards, iPads and programmable robots.
Our regular trips to museums, parks, outdoor education centres and the theatre are opportunities to take learning outside the classroom and enrich the curriculum.
English and Maths
Children take part daily in stimulating and engaging English and Mathematics lessons, which include practical activities, small group work and independent tasks. The curriculum is designed to enable children to build on existing skills and develop new skills progressively throughout Key Stage 1 with regular opportunities for practice and consolidation.
Science and Computing
We place a strong emphasis on learning through investigation in these subjects. Children are encouraged to discuss their ideas with each other and to extend their thinking and reasoning skills by planning and completing experiments in Science and by creating and evaluating their own and each other’s interactive games through a coding programme in Computing.
